Animal Characteristics

Head-Body Length:35 cm
Identification:The snowy sheathbill is white with a yellow, conical bill and pink facial skin.
Habitat:Coastal plains, rocky and sandy intertidal zones, occasionally ice floes
Diet:Carnivore: eggs, animal scraps, mollusks, crustaceans, fish
Reproduction:Females lay 2-4 eggs in December or January. Both sexes incubate the eggs for 29 days and the chicks fledge 7-9 weeks after hatching. Usually only one or two chicks are raised successfully.
Large flocks gather from April to September.
Behavior:Snowy sheathbills are often seen walking in seal or sea lion colonies.

Interesting Facts:The snowy sheathbill is the only land bird that breeds on the Antarctic continent.
