Head-Body Length:40-48 cm
Identification:The upperparts of the lava heron are a dingy-green color. It has a black streak below its eyes, gray underparts, a glossy green back and tail, and a white chin.
Habitat:Coral reefs, tidal mudflats
Diet:Carnivore: small crabs, insects, fish
Reproduction:The breeding season is from April to July. Small nesting colonies of 8-15 pairs form during this time. Each pair has 2-4 eggs.
Behavior:Lava herons are usually nocturnal. Their activity is determined by the tides - as the tide recedes, the reefs are exposed and the herons can feed.
