Animal Characteristics

Identification:The common grenadier is a colorful species with a chestnut brown body, olive brown wings, a blue rump, a black tail, violet cheeks, a blue forehead, a black throat, and a red eye ring and bill. The colors are lighter in the female.
Habitat:Dry thornveld, woodlands
Diet:Omnivore: seeds and insects
Reproduction:Late summer is the time for breeding. After a nest is built in a thorn tree, the female will lay 4-5 eggs and incubate them for 12-13 days. Both parents help care for the hatchlings.
Small flocks may form with no more than ten birds.
