Animal Characteristics

Identification:Oribi are yellow to red-brown in color with white undersides. They have a white stripe over each eye, a black-tipped tail, and a black patch of bare skin under their ears. Males have small horns.
Habitat:Wide grassy plains with low bushes near water
Diet:Herbivore: grazers/browsers, grass, herbs, tree foliage
Reproduction:Males mate with females that share their territories. One young is born after a gestation period of 6.5-7 months.
Oribi live in small herds of 2-6 individuals.
Behavior:Males mark their territories with glandular secretions on twigs and grass stems. Most activity occurs during the late day and on bright nights.
Status:Threatened: habitat loss due to expanding agriculture, poaching
Interesting Facts:In this species, the female is actually larger than the male. Predators of the oribi include leopards, caracals, pythons, jackals, eagles, baboons, and badgers.
