Dates: 1897-2011
Bulk Dates: 1940-1981
Quantity: 36.25+ linear feet
Identification: WGDC
Abstract: Colorado State University's strength in groundwater research evolved naturally from the state's early residents needing information on irrigated agriculture. The data, maps, charts, drafts, correspondence, photographs, final reports, and reference materials that were produced by or collected for these groundwater studies over the years are what comprise the Groundwater Data Collection. Materials relate to the groundwater studies that CSU researchers conducted primarily in eastern Colorado (the South Platte basin, High Plains, and Arkansas Valley) as well as the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. Subjects of particular focus are artificial recharge, observation wells, and irrigation pumping.

Colorado State University's strength in groundwater research evolved naturally from the state's early residents needing information about irrigated agriculture. Not long after irrigation engineering was established as a distinct course of study at the State Agricultural College (now CSU) in 1889, Louis G. Carpenter, the professor who taught the course, conducted research which led to Agricultural Experiment Station bulletin number 33, Seepage or Return Waters From Irrigation (1896), which was the first of the bulletins to concentrate on water flow below ground. Bulletin 180, Seepage and Return Waters (1911), also by Carpenter, furthered this research, as did several other publications, including bulletin 279, Return of Seepage Water to the Lower South Platte River in Colorado (1922) by Ralph L. Parshall.
In 1929, a program was initiated by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station "to determine changes in the water table in certain areas in Colorado where pumping for irrigation was important" (W. E. Code, Water Table Fluctuations in Eastern Colorado. Bulletin 500-S, p. 1). In the 1940s, studies were initiated in the South Platte Valley and Prospect Valley. Agreements between the U.S. Geological Survey and the state enabled more funding to flow to the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (again, an earlier name for CSU) for groundwater studies. The studies primarily related to artificial recharge, observation wells and irrigation pumping.
The data, maps, charts, drafts, correspondence, photographs, final reports and reference materials that were produced by or collected for these groundwater studies over the years are what comprise the Groundwater Data Collection. CSU engineering faculty and staff contributing to the studies represented in this collection include Morton W. Bittinger, John Brookman, William E. Code, Harold R. Duke, Robert E. Glover, Robert A. Longenbaugh, Edmund Schulz, Morris M. Skinner and Daniel K. Sunada.
The Groundwater Data Collection consists of documents dated from 1897 to 2011, with the bulk concentrated from the 1940s through the 1970s. The materials were amassed over the years by various people in a room at Colorado State University's Engineering Research Center. Predominant material types include data, reports, correspondence, charts, maps, photographs, slides, clippings, films, and microfilm.
The materials in the collection were roughly grouped by project or material type, which were easily made into series. Further rearrangement was minimal, with the exception of subseries creation for greater clarity.
The collection consists of 11 series in 27 boxes, 3 flat drawers, and 6 tubes:

Acquisition

The Groundwater Data Collection was picked up by Water Resources Archive staff in June 2002 from the Engineering Resource Center on CSU's Foothills Campus, where the collection had been created and stored. A deed of gift was signed in August 2003 by Robert Ward, Director of the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, and Robert Longenbaugh, Consultant Water Engineer and one of the collection creators, on behalf of the CSU engineering faculty. Additional materials were donated in 2011 by David Frick on behalf of Ayres Associates (2 boxes) and by Robert Longenbaugh (8 boxes and some oversized materials). Several files generated by Longenbaugh from the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute (accession 2009033) were transferred to this collection. Some reports and maps found at the Engineering Research Center were added in 2013.

Appraisal

The main appraisal criterion was that materials had to relate to CSU groundwater studies in order to be retained. Books and federal or state government publications not of a unique or rare nature were not retained. These items went through the normal library selection process to be added to the main stacks as appropriate. Duplicates of reports were not retained past a second copy. Printing negatives were discarded, as were most full-size versions of maps that had been reduced for publications. A bibliography of groundwater publications compiled on index cards and several printouts of computer programs were not retained. From the 2011 Longenbaugh accession, duplicate publications and photocopies of maps were returned to him.

Processing

Processing of the collection was completed in February 2004. Materials were removed from three-ring binders, envelopes and existing folders and inserted in acid-free folders. The majority of metal fasteners were removed and replaced with plastic clips as needed. Rubber bands and self-stick notes were removed. Newspaper clippings were inserted between sheets of acid-free paper. Loose photographs, negatives and slides were separated to the last series and inserted in archival sleeves, envelopes or folders. Existing slide sleeves were replaced with archival ones. The rolled oversized items were unrolled and stored flat if possible; otherwise they were stored in large tubes. Films remain in their original containers. Two items, one from the Parshall Collection, were added in March 2005. A few folders and some oversized items were added in September 2010. Six boxes of materials, along with some oversized items, from Ayres Associates and Robert Longenbaugh were rehoused and added in October 2011. Most items were added to Series 9 or a newly-created Series 11. One map was placed in Subseries 5.2, and three oversize maps were placed in Subseries 7.5. A few folders generated by Robert Longenbaugh donated by the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute and others found at the Engineering Research Center were added in 2013.

Separated Collections

Some materials not directly related to groundwater in the 2011 accession from Ayres Associates were separated and integrated in the Local Water Resources History Collection.

Related Collections

Related collections in the Water Resources Archive include the Papers of Morton W. Bittinger and the Papers of Robert E. Glover, two of the researchers represented in the Groundwater Data Collection. Also related are the Papers of Daryl B. Simons, who served as the associate dean for engineering research (among other positions) at CSU, and the Records of the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, which funded some of the groundwater studies.

Note: Title information supplied by the archivist is bracketed. Estimated pagination is preceded by an "e." Two identical copies of the same item are indicated by the phrase "2 copies" at the end of the entry, following the number of pages of each copy. Authored articles, books, and studies are listed in bibliographic form. Maps listed in flat files are typically 24 x 36 inches or smaller, unless described as large or rolled.

Series 1: Observation well data, 1928-1980 (7.5+ linear feet)

The study of groundwater in Colorado through the use of an observation well network was a long term project for the State Agricultural College of Colorado (now CSU) and its Agricultural Experiment Station. The program began in the late 1920s and focused on areas where pumping for irrigation was important. The data found here is primarily from the 1960s and 1970s. The materials are arranged in seven subseries, primarily by type.
Box Folder
Subseries 1.1: Field copies. 1936-1976.
This subseries consists of the data collection sheets which were taken to the field to record the water level measurements at the observation wells, typically in the spring and fall of each year from about 1962 to 1975. Many of the sheets have a small photo of the well site stapled to them. Some files also contain sheets of data collected by the USGS. In addition, there are occasionally county highway maps and data charts included. The files are arranged alphabetically by Colorado county or other geographic area.

Series 5: High Plains, 1959-1980 and undated (1.5+ linear feet)

The materials in this series primarily relate to the artificial groundwater recharge studies in the High Plains of Colorado. The principal study represented here was conducted on the Arikaree River near Cope, Colorado. Robert Longenbaugh was the principal investigator on the project, which began in 1964 with state funding to the Colorado Ground Water Commission, which subcontracted with CSU. The goal was to study the feasibility of recharging excess or flood waters to an unconfined aquifer. Longenbaugh was also principal investigator on an earlier study (1963) on playa lakes in eastern Colorado as well as a participant in a later study (1974) in the Frenchman watershed. Other studies found here relate to irrigation pump efficiency tests and pumping costs. The materials are arranged in two subseries.

Series 8: Miscellaneous, 1929-1977 (0.75+ linear feet)

This series is comprised of materials that do not relate directly to the groundwater studies of the previous series but are of significance. The materials are arranged in two subseries.
Box Folder
Subseries 8.1: Files. 1929-1977.
This subseries contains documentation on the College Farm drain, Spring Creek, Foothills rain gages, the Western States Water Council, and two groundwater short courses. More significant are the files from two of the researchers represented throughout this collection: W. E. Code and Robert E. Glover. The Code papers show the history of early U.S. Geological Survey studies in Colorado and how Code felt about the USGS, as well as some 1940s Experiment Station budget information. The Glover papers include a partial draft of a book with M. W. Bittinger as co-author, well test analyses, early (1950s) notes on groundwater management, and some original work on analytic solutions to pumping impact on streamflows in an alluvial valley. Materials in the subseries include correspondence, memoranda, reports, charts, and maps.

Subseries 8.2: Oversize. 1947-1957.
This subseries contains eight miscellaneous maps and charts, most significantly of Colorado A and M lands, the Parshall flume, and College Farm drainage. They are in no particular order.
Drwr 3 1 [Maps and graphs--miscellaneous]. 1947-1957, undated. 8 sheets
Contains map of Colorado A and M College lands; 3 sheets related to College Farm drainage investigation (W. J. Frederick); "Diagram for solution of Kutter's formula for vitrified clay pipe running full"; "Hydraulic properties of circular sections"; two drawings of 8-foot and 6-foot Parshall measuring flume.

Series 9: Printed materials, 1912-2011 (10 linear feet)

This series is comprised of printed materials accumulated by groundwater researchers for reference purposes. The materials were heavily weeded of common federal and state documents, but some remain for various reasons, as do the majority of the limited-distribution reports. Items related to states other than Colorado can be found here, as can some more general subtopics. The materials are arranged in six subseries. Subseries 9.5 and 9.6 were added in 2011.
Box Folder
Subseries 9.1: Groundwater. 1936-2011.
The materials in this subseries are primarily reports and publications on the subject of groundwater. The materials are categorized by state, with Colorado coming first and the rest alphabetically, followed by categories of general, management, legislation, and models. Materials added in 2011 and 2013 are listed at the ends of categories.

Series 11: Longenbaugh accessions, 1947-2002 and undated (3.5 linear feet)

This series contains several studies of groundwater basins in Colorado. Former CSU professor and Assistant State Engineer Robert Longenbaugh donated materials in this series in 2011, with materials generated by Longenbaugh and given to the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute added in 2013. Subseries 11.1 contains the 1979-1981 High Plains-Ogallala Aquifer Study, which is related to the 1965 High Plains study found in Series 5. Subseries 11.2 holds materials from other basin studies and committees in which Longenbaugh participated.
Box Folder
Subseries 11.1: High Plains study. 1947-1984 and undated.
The materials in this subseries primarily relate to the Colorado portion of the 1979-1981 six-state High Plains-Ogallala Aquifer Study. The $6 million study administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce, with the Colorado portion conducted by Colorado State University and three state agencies, investigated the aquifer's depletion and generated suggestions for mitigation and management. Documents focus on Robert Longenbaugh's examination of economic sustainability and energy and water consumption by irrigation pumps on Colorado's Northern and Southern High Plains. This study is a later but similar study to that found in Series 5. Materials include raw data, reference material, correspondence, research notes, conference materials, and reports and publications. Files are grouped by material type and follow a general timeline from the beginning to the end of the study.
